ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - A family home no longer stands in Eagle River following a “devastating” Saturday night fire, according to the Anchorage Fire Department.

Shortly after 10:13 p.m. Saturday, volunteer firefighters at Chugiak Volunteer Fire and Rescue responded to a 911 call reporting a garage fire on Savage Drive.

According to an AFD social media post, the family did not know their home was on fire until loud cracks and pops were heard. The family was able to evacuate safely.

Neighbors reported hearing what sounded like gunfire, but were bursts of explosions coming from the burning home.

AFD says the biggest challenge firefighters faced during the hours-long firefight was the lack of water so high up the mountain. AFD command was not released until 4:10 a.m. Sunday morning.

Alaska’s News Source reached out to AFD for photos and comment, but had not received any communication at the time of publication.
