ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - From walking and biking to gardening and yard work, the goal is simple: get active and log your movement.

The 100 Miles in May challenge, now in its 20th year, is hosted by Healthy Futures, a statewide nonprofit focused on encouraging physical activity, especially in children. It’s open to all ages and all fitness levels, with participants pledging to log 100 miles of movement throughout the month of May.

“First off, it’s May, and everyone kind of wants to get moving and get in shape for summer,” said Harlow Robinson, Executive Director of Healthy Futures. “Even if you’re just out doing yard work, like I’ve been doing a lot of yard work, and I go in, and get on my computer and I enter 120 minutes of yard work, and it gives me about two and a half, three miles.”

So far, more than 5,000 people have signed up, and that number keeps growing.

Robinson said the challenge also serves as a fundraiser to support Healthy Futures’ work in schools, providing resources and incentives that help kids build healthy habits. Research shows that kids who are physically active tend to perform better academically and socially.

This year, there’s an extra push from someone who knows the program firsthand: U.S. Olympic cross-country skier and Anchorage native Luke Jager. He’s the 2025 ambassador and credits Healthy Futures as part of his journey.

“It’s a great opportunity to one, financially support an organization that’s pretty just unilaterally positive in our community and has a really big impact in a lot of kids lives,” Jager said. “It’s also a good opportunity, you know, if you’re an adult who is not going to be in schools getting access to all the Healthy Futures stuff that’s going on, it’s a good opportunity for you to hold yourself accountable and get out and move and you know, it just feels good.”

Whether you’re creating a workplace team or going solo, the message is clear: movement matters, and there’s still time to join.
