ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - After a rollover crash left one Service High School student dead, the 17-year-old driver of the vehicle is being charged as an adult.

Court documents show that Stefan Shearer, 17, has been charged with manslaughter, driving under the influence, and tampering with physical evidence following the crash that occurred early Monday morning in a Rabbit Creek neighborhood.

Police who responded to the scene on Bluebell Drive early Monday confirmed all three inside the vehicle were minors after the 911 call where the driver said one occupant was trapped under the vehicle.

According to court documents, one teen was trapped under the F-350, lodged against a tree “with no observable way to remove the trapped male.”

He was alive, according to court documents, breathing and talking.

“The juvenile male gave police a ‘thumbs up’; he was declared deceased shortly after being freed from the vehicle by the Anchorage Fire Department,” court records say.

Shearer is facing adult charges; one for felony manslaughter, another for tampering with evidence, and a misdemeanor DUI.

According to court documents, Shearer threw his wallet and other items away when police arrived.

“The wallet was recovered and contained two fake IDs,” the documents state.

Shearer posted a $3,000 bail Wednesday and was ordered to remain in the state, and have no contact with the victim’s family at any time.

On Thursday, Shearer’s legal team appeared in court for his first preliminary hearing (PIH). Shearer was not present in court.

After a rollover crash left one Service High School student dead, the 17-year-old driver of the vehicle is being charged as an adult.

“I filed a limited entry appearance, and also the consent for the juvenile to not to be present today,” Chris Provost, Shearer’s attorney, said. “We’re stipulating to two months extension to the next PIH.”

Shearer is currently on 24/7 house arrest. His next court appearance is set for Dec. 12.
