Health Watch: Lower back pain, a common problem with a simple solution
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Lower back pain is an issue millions of Americans face, often limiting mobility and causing discomfort that can spread to other parts of the body.
According to the National Health Interview Survey, 39% of U.S. adults reported experiencing back pain in 2019, with those aged 65 and older being particularly affected. Women are also more likely to experience this pain compared to men.
But relief may be closer than you think and it doesn’t involve medication.
Dr. Sanjay Gupta, host of the Chasing Life podcast, highlights the benefits of walking as a potential solution.
“New research suggests there’s an easy way to possibly prevent it, and that’s by simply walking, simply moving. A recent study linked walking to fewer flare-ups and backaches, and we know that walking is good for the entire body,” he explained.
Walking strengthens muscles, improves metabolism, and promotes overall health.
However, Dr. Gupta cautions against overdoing it at first, particularly for those already in pain.
“Make sure to vary your pace and distance throughout the week. Also, consider adding resistance training and stretching, especially exercises targeting your back,” Gupta advised.
Proper footwear is another essential factor. Wearing shoes with good arch support can protect your hips, back, and other parts of the body from injury.
The CDC notes that common causes of lower back pain include heavy lifting, prolonged sitting, or sudden movements like twisting or bending. Medical conditions such as sprains, spinal stenosis, and arthritis can also contribute to the problem.
