ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - A 15-year-old died after he fell through the ice on the Kuskokwim River on Saturday night.

According to Alaska State Troopers, Cole Gilila and another young man were driving a snow machine on the Kuskowkim when they drove into a hole in the ice about eight miles upriver of Kalskag.

One young man was able to get out of the water, but Gilila disappeared under the ice. Search and Rescue volunteers launched from both Kalskag and Aniak and State Troopers say Gilila’s body was recovered from the river about 8 p.m. Saturday.

The young man who made it out of the water was taken to the Kalskag clinic, where AST reports he was cold but uninjured.

Gilila’s body will be sent to the State Medical Examiner for an autopsy.
