Knik River Bridge project likely to cause back-ups and delays for Mat-Su commuters
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Motorists who commute between Anchorage and the Mat-Su should plan on budgeting extra time to reach their destination starting in April as the Alaska Department of Transportation begins rehabilitation work on two Knik River bridges just south of the Glenn/Parks Highway interchange.
According to DOT Spokesperson Justin Shelby, the northbound bridge is scheduled to close sometime between April 16 and 23 and will remain closed for an entire month while the work is being completed.
During that time, traffic will be rerouted onto the southbound bridge.
According to the project website:
“When one bridge is closed the other will remain open at a reduced speed limit to three lanes of traffic, two in one direction and one in the other. There will be two lanes of southbound traffic open during the morning rush to Anchorage. Crews will then shift the median and open two lanes of northbound traffic during the afternoon rush back to the Mat-Su Valley. Drivers should expect congestion and delays.”

Once work is completed on the northbound bridge, officials will re-open it and use the same traffic pattern as they begin work on the southbound bridge. Work on the southbound bridge is also expected to take a month.
Drivers are encouraged to check Alaska 511 and visit www.glennbridges.com for more information about the bridge work.
