Following hours of suspense, Nenana Classic Tripod stops the clock
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - After teetering on the edge for about half a day, Alaska’s most famous four-legged tripod fell all the way through the ice on the Tanana River Sunday afternoon, bringing an end to this year’s Nenana Ice Contest.
According to contest officials on social media, the clock stopped at 3:56 p.m. on April 27. Records kept by the contest indicate this is only the fifth time the ice has gone out on April 27, which happened in 1988, 2007, and 2020, and 2024.
Contest officials have announced they still need to complete the task of tabulating guesses, after which time the contest winner or winners can be shared. If no one guessed the exact time of the tripod’s fall, the next closest time would win the jackpot. It is possible that several people will have guessed the winning time and split the jackpot.
