Alaska-raised voice actor returns to hometown for Arctic Comic-Con
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - As fans lined up for pictures and autographs, voice actor Kira Buckland sat behind a table happily greeting them during Arctic Comic-Con 2025.
The weekend of programming celebrated all things pop culture at the Dena’ina Center in Anchorage. The con brought actors, artists and creators of different types, but unlike the other guests, Buckland is not just visiting, she’s returning home.
“It’s really exciting,” Buckland said. “I do come back to Anchorage a lot to visit my family, but it’s always fun when I get to do a convention on top of it.”
Buckland got her start in voice over while still living in Anchorage, working for friends and content creators, she later moved to Los Angeles to pursue a full-time career in the business.
Now, Buckland has a number of different credits to her name, including roles in internationally circulated television series and video games like “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure,” and “Genshin Impact,” among others.
Acting in such roles was always an aspiration of Buckland’s, but she said she didn’t expect the sort of fan reception she receives at conventions around the country.
“I was just determined to make it a reality no matter what,“ Buckland said. ”So I definitely knew that I wanted to do something like that. Conventions were very different back when I started, so it wasn’t like it is now, so that aspect of it wasn’t as much on my radar.”
While Anchorage is far from the studios of Los Angeles, Buckland said that is not an obstacle for anyone wishing to do what she does.
“I think learning to be an actor is the most important part, just taking any kind of acting classes, getting any training or experience you can,” Buckland said. “It doesn’t have to be just in voice. You can do plays. You can do anything like that,
Buckland appreciates the fandom and was happy to take photos and sign autographs for those at Arctic Con, but said it takes more behind the scenes to do what she does.
“I always just kind of try to keep in mind that it’s about contributing to the whole of the creative product,” Buckland said. “So you know, I’m fortunate enough to help bring these characters to life, but it’s really thanks to the people who write these stories and draw and animate this art and everything like that, that create the stories people love. And I’m just a a small part of that, but very thankful to be a part of it.”
