ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - A cow moose and her day-old calf continue to make the lawn outside the Providence Health Park in Anchorage their home following the calf’s birth.

On Thursday morning, in the park’s green belt that runs through campus, the moose gave birth to its calf.

“Providence delivers about 2,300 babies a year, but these were a little different than what we normally see,” Michael Kubler, the Emergency Manager at Providence Alaska Medical Center (PAMC), said. “This was certainly an unusual experience for us to have a birth right here in the middle of campus.”

PAMC has since placed signs in the area to warn people about the moose and calf on the property. According to Alaska Fish and Game, calving season is when moose tend to express more aggression. Alaska’s News Source confirmed that on Friday morning, at least one person experienced the moose charging toward them.

“This is one of the biggest times of the year we start seeing cow moose being particularly aggressive because they are defending their young. Right now, they know moose calves can’t get up, can’t run really fast, can’t keep up with mom, [which] means mom’s defense is to stand her ground and defend anything near it,” Cory Stantorf, with Alaska Fish and Game, said.

Kubler told Alaska’s News Source that the medical center is giving the moose space at the moment.

“We’re fortunate she picked a good spot where the backside of the building doesn’t impact access to the facility,” Kubler said. “We’re absolutely keeping safety in mind and making sure that she has peace and quiet while they get accustomed.”

Kubler reminds the public that PAMC is an area for medical care and asks that this site not become a tourist location. However, Kubler said, if people are visiting the hospital, they might be able to see the moose and the calf from a safe distance inside the PAMC’s Creekside Café.
