VIDEO: Mama moose gives birth outside Anchorage hospital
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - While Providence Hospital often serves as the place of birth for many human babies in Anchorage, it also provides the perfect setting for wildlife births on rare occasions.
That was the scene Thursday morning on a patch of grass outside Providence, where a mama moose gave birth to the city’s newest calf.
The moment was captured on video by onlookers who were watching safely from behind glass panels on the building’s exterior.
One video, taken by an onlooker who identified herself as Louise C., depicts the mother moose standing up moments after the calf is birthed as it begins to lick its offspring and nurture the newborn.
Louise said she was walking to the hospital’s café nearby when she noticed the crowd.
“I see a ton of people peering over the balcony and I’m like, ‘What’s going on?’ and so I go over and there’s a moose who just gave birth, and it’s so exciting because this is a once-in-a-lifetime thing to witness,” she recalled.
“It was just the cutest thing ever and I’ve never witnessed something like that.”
As of the time of publication, the two moose were still in the area and it was unclear if the birthing process was over.
Providence is no stranger to moose encounters; two years ago, a moose wandered into the lobby at Providence Health Park in the U-Med District after it reportedly noticed decorative potted plants through the panels of glass from outside.
