Anchorage reporting double the potholes this spring
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - The Municipality of Anchorage is reporting thousands of potholes so far this season, up from recent years.
The city told Alaska’s News Source on Friday that it has fixed over 2,300 potholes this year.
Municipal Street Maintenance Manager Paul VanLandingham said that is double from last year so far.
“Last year to this date, we had about 1,100,” VanLandingham said. “I don’t know that at the end of the season or end of the summer, I don’t know that there’ll be more potholes.”
According to VanLandingham, his team typically starts patching potholes around March 1, but this year his team began filling them at the start of the new year.
“They’ve just shown up earlier, obviously with the earlier breakup,” VanLandingham said.
The city is asking that people report any potholes to its pothole hotline. People can also call the hotline at 907-343-6363. The city said it will aim to fix those potholes within 24 hours of them being reported on weekdays.
So far this year, of the 623 potholes reported to the hotline, 584 were done within the 24-hour window.
Potholes on DOT state-owned roads can be reported via email to dot.potholes@alaska.gov. People can also use a specific DOT number to report a pothole in their region of the state.
