Championships set for 1A/2A ASAA March Madness

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - The madness that is March has taken over the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage.

The 48 boys and girls basketball teams from over 30 villages are in town, vying for bragging rights and a first place trophy.

According to the Alaska School Activities Association (ASAA), last year saw 38,000 people come out to watch basketball for classifications 1A through 4A.

Friday was state semifinal day for the 1A and 2A boys and girls.

On the 2A girls side, Glennallen easily handled Chevak, 55-37. Glennallen will meet Seward in the state championship game Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Seward defeated Unalakleet 32-29 to advance.

Fort Yukon will face Shaktoolik in the 1A girls championship game at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Fort Yukon beat Napaaqtugmiut by four points to advance. Shaktoolik defeated Newhalen 50-45.

On the boys' side, Unalakleet punched a ticket to the title game with a 44-42 win over Seward. They’ll meet the winner of Cordova and Metlakatla on Saturday at 8:20 p.m.

One seed Shaktoolik defeated Manokotak 83-68. Shaktoolik will face the winner of Shishmaref and the Cook Inlet Academy at 4 p.m. Saturday.

All games take place at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage.
