ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Anchorage voters will see a proposition on April’s municipal ballot that looks to further fund local parks and trails.

Proposition 3 would authorize the issuance of over $8 million in bonds for the Anchorage Parks and Recreation department.

The capital raised from the bonds would go towards a number of different capital projects across the municipality. Improvements to Town Square Park, a new chalet in Midtown’s Cuddy Park, and connecting the Fish Creek trail to the Tony Knowles Coastal trail are among the 17 projects proposed.

“There are a number of bonds that are on the ballot,” said Anchorage Assembly Chairman Chris Constant. “The school district has its annual bond on the ballot, as does the Parks and Rec department, which is a substantial bond.”

Proposition 3 is one of nine other bonds on the ballot, and while it isn’t the largest, it is the largest parks and rec bond to be proposed in recent years.

“This year, it’s a bit of an increase with the real meaningful project for Town Square Park, which is sorely in need of a transformation and a transformative investment,” he said.

Of the total $8.25 million, the largest amount — $2.9 million — would be directed towards Town Square Park. That project is followed by the Fish Creek Connection, at $1.3 million and the Cuddy Park chalet listed at $400,000.

The Fish Creek connection project is one that has been brought up for close to thirty years, and was the subject of some concern recently as it runs near a pipeline owned by Marathon pipeline.

The organization Fish Creek Friends said that the dispute has been resolved, and as it stands the new route for the trail is about 75% designed.

If Prop. 3 passes, it would likely begin construction in 2026.
