Palmer mayor to remain, City Council to confirm election results Tuesday night
PALMER, Alaska (KTUU) - Palmer Mayor Steve Carrington will remain mayor following an election calling for his position to be recalled.
Unofficial results from the Canvass Board released on Friday showed that 222 voters did not want to recall Carrington. 176 people voted to recall him.
A total of 398 people voted, which is slightly more than seven percent of the registered voters in the City of Palmer.
The special election was called following concerns that Carrington sought outside legal counsel to draft an amendment or modification to the existing contract for former City Manager Stephen Jellie without the knowledge or authorization of the City Council. Those who called for the recall said he “abused executive power.”
The ballot included an official statement from Carrington stating that every council member voted on the severance pay, and he consulted an outside attorney after Jellie notified him that the city had retained one.
The Palmer City Council will certify the election results from the Canvass Board in its regular City Council meeting Monday night at 6 p.m.
Carrington’s term expires in October, when another election will be held for Mayor.
On Friday, Carrington filed a letter of intent to run as Mayor in the upcoming election. Joshua Tudor, Palmer’s Deputy Mayor, filed a letter of intent to run as Mayor on Sunday. Council Member John Alcantra filed a letter of intent to run as Mayor back in April.
