National spelling bee ends for 2 Alaskans
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Two Alaska middle-schoolers saw their run come to an end Tuesday night at the 2025 Scripps National Spelling Bee.
After advancing through the first two rounds, Homer middle schooler Majo Hernandez-Zamora and Fairbanks middle schooler Elden Wier failed to advance past the third round, a written test, at the competition held in National Harbor, Maryland.
Hernandez and Wier were the two Alaskan representatives out of the total 243 spellers at the national bee ranging in age from eight to 14 years old.
Both 13-year-old Alaskan contestants made it through the first two rounds — which included a vocabulary test — but they did not survive the third round Tuesday night, which challenged them to a written test.
With 99 students advancing, Hernandez and Wier will finish tied for 100th place.
