DOGE claims $13.6 million in real estate savings in Alaska
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Nine buildings were targeted this week in Alaska by Elon Musk’s Department Of Government Efficiency plan as part of its cost-cutting effort by terminating building leases.
The buildings are in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, Palmer, Wasilla and Seward, and include locations for the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, the Geological Survey, and the Forest Service buildings.
It claims that throughout Alaska, the “total savings” are $13,674,740 and the “annual lease costs” are $3,703,425.
The DOGE website claims that across the country, there are 748 lease terminations totaling more than 9.5 million square feet and $468 million in lease savings, which it claims adds up to $105 billion in savings for lease cancelations throughout the United States.
But DOGE has continued to update — and in some cases delete — contracts that it had previously listed as having saved money.
DOGE claims it’s found savings that have saved the initiative $105 billion through canceled building leases and contracts, terminated federal government grants, and a “combination of asset sales, contract/lease cancellations and renegotiations, fraud and improper payment deletion, grant cancellations, interest savings, programmatic changes, regulatory savings, and workforce reductions.”
It’s difficult to verify if the numbers are accurate based on multiple factors, including market prices, locations, and condition of the buildings. Additionally, one building’s options to renew the lease — the Office of the Secretary — has passed, but the possible savings were still included by DOGE.
