Earthquake swarm in western Aleutians
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - An earthquake swarm was detected on Sunday in the western Aleutians.
It began with a 6.3 earthquake at 10:57 a.m. Sunday near Bobrof Island and about 60 to 70 miles south of Adak. The Alaska Earthquake Center says what followed were a series of aftershocks but in the afternoon, two more earthquakes of 6.3 and 6.1 occurred within about 20 minutes of each other. The Earthquake Center says this is not normal main-aftershock behavior but is considered a “swarm.”
The Earthquake Center Director Michael West says that although there have been several strong earthquakes in the swarm, this doesn’t necessarily indicate they are precursors to a larger quake.
“Swarms of moderately large earthquakes are common in the Aleutians and do not necessarily portend anything more substantial,” West said in a statement on the Alaska Earthquake Center page. He added that because this area has had many large earthquakes, they are to watch the area closely.
