The Anchorage fishing equipment business posted that Merkushev “baited up and chucked it out and let it sit.”

“It had been planted on the bottom for about an hour when his rod stayed bouncing,” the post read.

After hooking the fish, the salmon was scooped up in the net shortly after 10 a.m.

“He set the hook and immediately knew he had a King worth of putting in the net,” the Bait Shack wrote.

In addition to bragging rights for hooking the first king salmon of the year, the Bait Shack said Merkushev will also get a free ticket for the annual Slam’n Salm’n Derby, along with more fishing gear from the business.
