Anchorage election administrator gives reminders and outlook on election eve
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Ballots continue to roll in for the Anchorage municipal election, which is nearing its final day and the official close on Tuesday.
Election division workers have already begun the process of scanning the ballots they’ve received. Results are expected to start coming in as early as 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, according to acting election administrator Jamie Heinz, after voting centers and drop boxes close at 8 p.m.
“[Tuesday] night’s results will probably include what we received today, some of what we received today, maybe not all,” Heinz said. “And that is because they went and did a second run to some of the big drop boxes. And so they’ll run those first thing in the morning, and then they will also have more big runs tomorrow.”
Mail-in ballots must be officially postmarked on or before election day, and for those voting in person, there will be four voting centers open on Tuesday, two in Loussac Library, one in city hall, and one in Eagle River Town Center.
The Anchorage Municipal Election Administrator resigned last week, but despite that, Heinz said counting is on pace with where it should be.
“We haven’t noticed any difference in returns,” Heinz said. “We are on at the same rate with all typical assembly race years.”
Election workers will be picking up the ballots throughout the day, with the final pickup at 8 p.m., but Heinz said casting ballots earlier during the workday may decrease wait times.
“They’re out there by the drop boxes about 7:55,” Heinz said. “If a car is in line at 8 p.m., they will let that car drop off their ballot, and then once that car leaves, then they will close the slots.”
